Node.js vs Bun vs Python: which runtime to choose
Pick the right Schokr template for your app or bot. Compare Node.js, Bun and Python by framework support, memory use and compatibility.
Updated · 2 min read
Choose the runtime your code is already written for. If you are starting fresh, pick Node.js for the widest package compatibility, Bun for fast startup and built-in TypeScript, or Python if you prefer Python libraries such as FastAPI, Django or data tools.
Quick comparison
| Node.js | Bun | Python | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Languages | JavaScript, TypeScript (with a build or loader) | JavaScript, TypeScript natively | Python |
| Package manager | npm (also pnpm, yarn) | bun | pip |
| Web frameworks | Express, Fastify, Next.js, NestJS | Hono, Elysia, most Node frameworks | Flask, FastAPI, Django |
| Bots | discord.js, grammY, Telegraf | discord.js, grammY | discord.py, python-telegram-bot |
| Compatibility | Best; reference runtime for npm | Very good, a few native addons differ | Best for ML and data libraries |
| Built-in SQLite | node:sqlite in recent versions (experimental) | bun:sqlite | sqlite3 module |
| Typical idle memory | 40 to 100 MB | 30 to 80 MB | 30 to 100 MB |
Memory figures are rough; your dependencies matter far more than the runtime.
Choose Node.js if
- You are deploying an existing JavaScript or TypeScript project.
- You use Next.js, NestJS, or packages with native addons.
- You want the behavior that tutorials and libraries are tested against.
Choose Bun if
- You want to run
.tsfiles directly with no build step. - You like built-ins such as
Bun.serve, bun:sqliteand automatic.envloading. - You want fast installs and fast startup.
Most npm packages work on Bun. If something fails only on Bun, switch the server to Node.js rather than fighting it.
Choose Python if
- Your app uses Flask, FastAPI or Django.
- You need Python libraries for data, scraping or AI SDKs.
- Your bot is written with discord.py or python-telegram-bot.
Can I switch later?
Yes. The runtime only depends on which template your server uses and your startup settings. Moving a JavaScript app between Node.js and Bun is usually just a matter of creating a new server with the other template and uploading the same files. Moving between JavaScript and Python means rewriting the app.
Resource planning
Your team's free pool is 6 GB memory, 1.5 CPU cores and 10 GB disk across up to 4 servers. A typical split might be:
| Server | Memory |
|---|---|
| Express or FastAPI API | 512 MB |
| Next.js site | 1.5 GB |
| Discord or Telegram bot | 256 to 512 MB |
