How to archive and unarchive files on Schokr

Compress folders into an archive to download them, or upload a zip and extract it on your Schokr server with the file manager.

The file manager can compress files into an archive and extract archives you upload. This is the fastest way to move many files, whole folders or worlds to and from your server.

Upload and extract an archive

Use this to upload a modpack, a world, a bot project or many plugins at once.

  1. On your computer, compress the files into a .zip (or .tar.gz).
  2. Open your server's file manager and go to the folder where the contents should end up.
  3. Upload the archive.
  4. Select the archive and choose to unarchive (extract) it.
  5. Check the result. Make sure files did not end up one folder too deep.
  6. Delete the archive to free disk space.

Watch out for the extra folder

If you zip a folder called my-bot, extracting it creates my-bot/ with your files inside. If your server expects index.js or main.py in the root folder, either:

  • Zip the contents of the folder instead of the folder itself, or
  • Move the files up one level after extracting.

Create an archive to download

Use this to download a world, back up configs or move a server.

  1. Stop the server if you are archiving something it writes to, such as a Minecraft world. This avoids copying half-saved files.
  2. In the file manager, select the files or folders you want.
  3. Choose to archive (compress) them. A new archive file appears in the current folder.
  4. Download the archive to your computer.
  5. Delete the archive from the server afterwards so it does not use your disk.

Disk space matters

An archive is a full copy of the files, compressed. While both exist, you use roughly the original size plus the archive size. If your disk is nearly full:

  • Archive fewer folders at a time.
  • Delete logs and crash reports first.
  • Temporarily give the server more disk in the Resources section.

See fixing a full disk.

Common uses

TaskWhat to archive or extract
Moving a Minecraft worldThe world folder (plus world_nether and world_the_end on Paper)
Deploying a botYour source files and package.json or requirements.txt
Moving to a new locationThe whole server folder, minus large caches
Uploading a modpackThe server pack's mods and config folders

Archive will not extract

  • The archive is corrupted: this often means the upload did not finish. Upload it again.
  • Unusual format: if you used a less common format, re-compress as .zip or .tar.gz and upload again.
  • Out of disk space: free some space or raise the disk limit, then try again.

Archive vs snapshot

Archives are files you manage yourself and download. Snapshots are saved copies of your server you can restore in one step from the console. For safety before big changes, use a snapshot.
