How to make yourself admin on a Rust server and use RCON
Add owners and moderators to your Rust server with ownerid and moderatorid, save them, and connect an RCON tool on Schokr.
Updated · 2 min read
Run ownerid with your SteamID64 in the server console, then server.writecfg to save it, and reconnect. For remote admin, set an RCON port and password in your Startup settings and connect with a tool such as RustAdmin.
Find your SteamID64
Your SteamID64 is a 17-digit number starting with 7656119. You can find it by opening your Steam profile URL (if you haven't set a custom URL it's in the address) or by pasting your profile link into a SteamID lookup site.
Add an owner or moderator
In the Schokr console for your server, run:
ownerid 76561198000000000 "YourName" "Server owner"
server.writecfg
For a moderator with fewer powers:
moderatorid 76561198000000001 "ModName" "Moderator"
server.writecfg
server.writecfg saves the list to server/rust/cfg/users.cfg. Without it, the change is lost on restart. Then disconnect and reconnect to the server so the game picks up your new auth level.
To remove someone:
removeowner 76561198000000000
removemoderator 76561198000000001
server.writecfg
Useful admin commands
Owners and moderators can run these from the F1 console in game, and you can run them from the Schokr console:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
status | List connected players with SteamIDs |
kick "name" "reason" | Kick a player |
ban "name" "reason" | Ban a player |
unban 76561198... | Remove a ban |
say "message" | Broadcast to chat |
server.save | Save the world now |
server.writecfg | Save convars and admin lists |
Some commands only work for owners, not moderators.
Setting up RCON
Rust's RCON runs on its own TCP port and uses WebSocket by default.
- Add a port allocation in the Network section (25 credits, or free with Schokr One). See adding port allocations.
- In the Startup settings, set the RCON port variable to the new port.
- Set a long, random RCON password variable.
- Restart. The console log shows RCON starting on your port.
Connecting a tool
Use any Rust RCON client, for example RustAdmin or BattleMetrics RCON. Enter:
- Host:
<server-ip> - Port: your RCON port
- Password: your RCON password
You can also use the command line client in our RCON guide.
Rust+ companion app
The Rust+ app uses a separate port, set by app.port. If you want players to pair the app with your server, add another allocation and point app.port at it, either in a Startup variable or in server.cfg.
Still stuck?
If ownerid doesn't seem to work, make sure you reconnected after running it. Otherwise ask in the Schokr Discord.
