How to create a TeamSpeak 3 server and get the privilege key
Set up a free TeamSpeak 3 server on Schokr, find the admin privilege key in the console on first start, and connect as Server Admin.
Updated · 2 min read
Create a server from the TeamSpeak 3 template, start it, and copy the privilege key (token) that appears in the console on the very first start. Connect with the TeamSpeak client and use that key to become Server Admin.
Creating the server
- Sign in at console.schokr.gg.
- Create a new server with the TeamSpeak 3 template.
- Pick the location closest to your group. Voice quality depends heavily on latency. See choosing a location.
- Assign resources. TeamSpeak is very light: a few hundred megabytes of memory and a little disk are plenty for a small community, leaving the rest of your pool for other servers.
- Create the server and wait for the install.
The TeamSpeak license is accepted for you by the template. Without a purchased license file, a TeamSpeak 3 server allows one virtual server with up to 32 slots, which is enough for most groups.
Get the privilege key on first start
This is the important part. The key is only generated once.
- Start the server from the console.
- Watch the log. On first start, TeamSpeak prints a block of text that includes:
- A ServerQuery admin login name and password.
- A privilege key (shown as
token=followed by a long string).
- Copy both somewhere safe, such as a password manager.
If you missed it, scroll back in the console. TeamSpeak also writes it to the log files in the logs folder, which you can open in the file manager. If it's gone, see TeamSpeak permissions for how to make a new one.
Connecting
- Open the TeamSpeak 3 client.
- Choose Connect, and enter the address as
<server-ip>:<port>using the IP and port shown on your Schokr console page. - Pick a nickname and connect.
Becoming Server Admin
- Once connected, open the Permissions menu and choose to use a privilege key.
- Paste the token and confirm.
- You're now in the Server Admin group, with full control of the server.
Each privilege key works once. After you use it, it's gone, so set up other admins by creating new keys or adding them to groups. See TeamSpeak permissions.
First things to set up
- Server name and welcome message: right-click the server name at the top of the channel tree and edit the virtual server.
- Server password: in the same edit window, set a password if you want a private server.
- Channels: right-click to create channels. Set some as permanent so they stay when empty.
- File transfers: avatars, icons and file browsing need an extra port. See fixing TeamSpeak file transfers.
Sharing with friends
Send people your <server-ip>:<port>. Schokr doesn't provide custom domains, but if you own a domain you can create a DNS record at your domain registrar pointing at the server's IP, and include the port when connecting, or use an SRV record for TeamSpeak.
Still stuck?
If you can't find the privilege key in the console or logs, ask in the Schokr Discord.
